Socialnomics & This is Social Media

If you are interested in how Social Media (SM) can help your business but don’t know whether to tweet on Twitter.com, update your status on Facebook or build a network on LinkedIn.com then these books will get you moving in the right direction.
Socialnomics by Erik Qualman
Socialnomics leans towards how SM is revolutionising business and marketing and creating a new, massively powerful word-of-mouth environment. An environment where good businesses and brands will thrive and where bad service, poor products will simply fall by the wayside.
One key point made by the book is that as use of social media grows then the traditional search engine model will suffer and great products and services will find us through tweets, status updates etc.
It does not really give a strategy to adopt, or not one that I picked up on the first read through and a lot of the strategies seem more relevant for larger companies but nevertheless, it is something that all businesses can and should adopt now rather than later.
This is Social Media by Guy Clapperton
This is Social Media is more of an overview of the many different networks out there, what they are about and who uses them. Again, it is not really a point-by-point plan but more an awareness of everything from tweets & blogging through MySpace, Facebook and the like.
The book also covers Search Engine Optimisation and Pay Per Click advertising (although very briefly and from a high level).
The book does give you a framework to build your own plan around for social media usage but due to the range of different platforms and the different business objectives it can only really show the path rather than give you a dummies guide to Social Media Success.
Summary
If you are not yet using social media in your business then both books will open your eyes to social media and how it can help you better communicate and stay in touch with you clients whilst also enabling you to keep in touch and promote products and services.
If you are involved in the marketing or customer support aspects of a large businesses, I would suggest you order both books and read Socialonomics first, be terrified and then establish a social media policy. If you are a smaller business wondering just what the fuss is about, pick up This is Social Media for a general overview and start dipping your toe in.
